Get Kids Cooking offers a monthly cooking club, where subscribers receive child-friendly recipe cards, utensils, shopping lists and other goodies – and schools earn a fixed amount for each new subscription.
In a nutshell
Fundraising Ideas: monthly subscription to an at-home cooking club suitable for children aged between 5 and 13 years
Suitable for: schools, community groups
Profit: $10 per subscription (which sell for $19.95 per month)
Get Kids Cooking offers a slightly different way of raising funds, by allowing schools to sell subscriptions to a monthly at-home cooking club.
For a monthly payment of $19.95 (payable by PayPal or PayPal with credit) subscribers receive three child-friendly, allergy aware recipe cards, a kid-safe cooking tool or utensil (plus a card on how to use it), a monthly badge to sew onto an apron, a craft activity, shopping list and more. The goal of the club is to teach children a range of skills and ideas they use at home to enable them to start cooking meals for their family.
Examples of utensils received every month include measuring spoons, kid-safe knives, chopping boards and pastry brushes.
Recipes cover everything from roast chicken and vegetables, fresh spring rolls, Anzac biscuits and even a recipe for bath salts just in time for Mother’s Day.
The fundraising process
The majority of this fundraiser is done online with minimal effort required by the school.
Contact Get Kids Cooking to confirm the fundraiser and the school will be sent a fundraising sheet for the organising committee, plus brochures to be sent home with children. A code is allocated to the school so that when people access the website to order a subscription, they enter the school’s code, and a commission will be paid to the fundraiser.
There is no cash outlay, and all finance and distribution is handled by the company – the school just needs to advertise and promote the fundraiser via newsletters and posters.
At the end of the fundraising period, a cheque or direct deposit will be made to the school of $10 per subscriber.
This type of fundraiser naturally supports schools which have a school garden and/or healthy eating focus.
As this is a monthly subscription with automatic deductions, subscribers should be aware of all of the terms and conditions. Cancellations can be made at any time after the first month although six weeks notice is required, thus effectively making the minimum subscription period two months, costing $39.90.
There is no reason why subscriptions cannot be sold outside of the school community, and with proper supervision, children could go door knocking to neighbours, or even set up a stall at a local market (with some food samples for tasting) to encourage others to sign up.
It should be noted that even though you are ‘selling subscriptions’, there is actually no selling involved. People will need to access the Get Kids Cooking website and make their order (and payment) online using the provided tracking code. Therefore, part of the challenge is ensuring that people who say ‘that sounds great, I’ll do it when I get home’ actually follow through with their subscription purchase.
