This healthy and child-friendly fundraiser combines the convenient model of chocolate drives where each participant receives a box containing a number of kits, but the kits contain calorie-free flower and herb seed kits which can be grown at home on the window-sill.
In a nutshell
Fundraising ideas: four different seed kits (fruit, vegetable, herbs, flowers) containing real dirt and a seed packet
Suitable for: Australia-wide, all-ages
Profit: 40% profit
Each participant is given a distinctive purple bag which contains ten seed kits*. There are four different types of bag (fruit, vegetable, herb and flower) and each bag contains a variety of seed kits. For example the flower seeds include snapdragon, Swan River daisy and alyssum and the herb kits include basil, rocket, and chives.
The vegetables come in winter and summer varieties with cool veggies incorporating Chinese broccoli, snow peas and cauliflower and the warm veggie packs including mixed lettuce, cherry tomatoes and mini cucumbers.
The kits contain real potting mix and there are sufficient seeds for a number of ‘plantings’. Flowers come in a cute little pot, vegetables in a plastic seed-raiser tray, fruit in cardboard noodle boxes and herbs in a specially designed bag that will reflect light onto the herbs and create a humid growing environment.
Simply tear the top of the bag, wet the soil, firm it down and sprinkle some seeds. There are drainage holes already in the bag. Plants should appear within days.
Costing and payment info
Each seed kit is sold for $6 each, totalling $60 per bag. The fundraiser keeps $24 (40%) and the remainder paid to Living Fundraisers. No money is required upfront. An invoice is sent at the time the goods are dispatched, with 30 days to pay.
Freight is free across Australia although due to quarantine regulations, a $20 fee per order is required for WA and Tasmania to cover custom inspections.
Returns are accepted provided a minimum number of bags have been sold.
Ordering/start up process
There is a minimum order of 10 carry bags (each containing 10 kits).
You can order a combination of kits to boost sales. Pre-mixed herb/veg and flower/fruit kits are available.
Orders must be in increments of 5 bags. Support materials are provided and unsold stock can be returned provided it is over the minimum order and before the 30 day invoice is due.
It is recommended that each participant be given one bag (ie ten kits) to sell.
They are easy to carry and perfect for door-knocking or setting up a stall at a fete or local markets. They could also be taken into workplaces.
Timeliness of process
Living Fundraiser dispatches products three times a week, and orders will be sent within three days. Kits will take between one day and a week to arrive (depending on which state).
It is recommended you give participants 2-3 weeks to sell all their kits.
Logistical issues such as keeping track of bags and money.
Seeds have limited shelf life (12 months).
While the Living Fundraiser packaging is distinctive and not sold in shops, seed kits are readily available and therefore might not be seen as exclusive.
Positive points of difference
As well as helping your own group, you will also be supporting others: Living Fundraisers work in partnership with The Bridge Works, a community organisation which supports people with disabilities.
Sugar-free and eco-friendly.
Low price point means easy to sell.
Easy for children to be involved.
If 50 families are given a bag each and sell all ten kits, then the total profit to the school/club is $1,200.
