Fundraising doesn’t always have to mean creating and selling products. When you have a good cause, you may be surprised to find that people are willing to hand over their money simply because they support what you are doing. Giggle Donation Cards are a fun way of facilitating cash donations, and donors do get something in return – a laugh.
Although this post is sponsored by one of my advertisers, all opinions are my own, and I think they are great products I want to share with FRM readers.
In a nutshell:
Products: personalised scratch card with riddles that are revealed along with small donation amount
Suitable for: schools, sports clubs, community groups, charities, kindergartens
Profit: 1,000% (or $55 per card)
Giggle Donation Cards are a simple way of raising funds without the need to sell anything. You approach a potential donor and ask (for example) ‘Our school is fundraising for a new PA system. Would you like to donate?’ When they say yes, you ask them to choose one of the 34 silver dots on the card, which when scratched reveals a donation amount between 50 cents and $2 as well as a riddle (the answers are on the back of the card). The person hands over the amount and you can always ask if they want to try again. There are five different sets of riddles and a mix of each will be sent for all orders.
Each card will raise $55.
Costs and profits
Each Giggle Donation card costs $5 to purchase and are available in packs of either 10 or 20 cards. For every 10 cards purchased, you will receive a free card, which (once scratched and donations received) will pay for the cost of the ten cards.
Purchase 10 cards @ $5 each = $50. You receive one free card.
11 cards will raise $605 minus costs of cards ($50) = profit = $555.
Purchase 50 cards @ $5 each = $250. You receive 5 free cards.
55 cards will raise $3,025 minus cost of cards = profit =$2,775.
Postage costs are $3 for up to 20 (22) cards in Australia, $5.35 to New Zealand and can also be sent to the US, Canada and the UK.
For a school in Australia to order 100 cards, the total cost including postage would be $515, and the 110 cards received would raise $6,050 which is a clear profit of $5,535.
All ordering is done online and the cards include printed stickers with your fundraising group’s details, plus a bag for each card to collect donations.
Giggle Donation Cards would work particularly well when your school or club is raising funds for a specific project, and because you are able to calculate the profit in advance, you know how many cards you require to meet your target.
With adult supervision, it is simple for children of all ages to participate in, either by approaching family, friends and neighbours, as well as strangers. You could approach local farmers markets or community events and ask if students in their uniforms could stand at entry points or key locations and approach people to make a donation. Ideally, a stand or market stall with bright posters showing what you are raising money for would attract donors. For example, if you are raising funds for a kitchen garden, you could set up a wheelbarrow with plants, a small raised garden bed or even make a scarecrow, dress the students in gardening gloves and overalls and place large signs saying ‘Help us raise money for a new kitchen garden at Bedford Primary School.’
The amount of each donation is manageable for all potential donors, and it is likely that most individuals would be willing to scratch more than one donation amount, or ‘round up’ because it is going towards a good cause.
This type of fundraiser could be seen as a reprieve from more work-intensive fundraisers such as fetes or quiz nights, as there is minimal organisation required and no hard-sales required. The inclusion of the riddles also add an element of fun, and even though people who donate cash to this type of appeal do not expect anything in return, it’s always nice for them to leave with a smile.
“I have used the Giggle Cards twice now for raising money for the Pink Ladies. They are fun, the characters are great, and the riddles really did bring giggles. Best of all we raised more than the $55 per card as most people were generous and if they got a 50c or $1 spot they sometimes gave extra. The fact the Donation Amounts were small like 50c to $2 wasn’t a big ask and so people were happy to give it a go.”
