Seed bombs have been used for centuries by the Japanese, but it is only recently they have made their way to Australian shores, made by hand using organic ingredients by a new family business: Aussie Seed Bombs. They are perfect gifts and party favours and are available now as an eco-friendly fundraiser.
Fundraising Idea: handmade, organic seed bombs in a variety of seed types
Suitable for: all groups in NSW, Qld, Vic and ACT*
Profits: from 25% (or $3.75 per bag) up to 30% (or $4.50 per bag) for sales over 500 bags
What are seed bombs?
Seed bombs are small balls made of compost, clay and seeds. The clay protects the seeds from birds as well as acting as a wetting agent, while the compost provides the seeds the nutrients needed to start germinating.
They can be thrown into the garden or laid on top of a pot, and you can just leave them for the rains to start their germination, or actively water for quicker results.
An eco-friendly fundraiser
Aussie Seed Bombs are handmade, with organic, non-GMO seeds and compost and premium clay. The packaging is plastic-free and made with natural cotton and paper, making it a perfect option for groups seeking an eco-friendly fundraiser.
All ingredients are locally sourced and designed even for hard-to-reach or bare gardens. They are also an all-ability fundraiser, and a great way for people with limited mobility to be involved in positive environmental actions.
What seed bomb varieties are available?
There are currently nine varieties of seed bombs including flowers, mixed herbs and salad mix. Each variety comes in a cotton bag with 12 seed bombs. Seed bombs are hand-rolled with between 3-6 seeds per bomb, designed to maximise the success rate while not having too many seeds which will end up competing with each other.
- Sunflower Yellow
- Crimson clover
- Tomato variety
- Mixed herb
- Mexican Sunflower
- Livingston Daisy
- White Clover
- Queen Anne Thimbles
- Mesclun salad mix
How does the fundraiser work?
You will be provided with pretty colour brochures as well as an order form which can be printed. Take payments from customers as they make their order ($15 per bag) and at the conclusion of the fundraiser retain your profit (25% of sales for the first 499 bags sold, 30% of sales for 500+ bags) and send through the order and payment.
Delivery will take between 2-4 weeks depending on the size of the order. Delivery is free in the metropolitan area (NSW, Vic, Qld and ACT). Beyond this there may be a small delivery fee depending on postcode.
If a school of 200 students each sell one bag, the profit will be $750.
If each student sells three bags of seed bombs, the profit will be $2,700.
Worth mentioning
While the fundraiser can be held at any time of year, they make a perfect winter term fundraiser in the lead-up to spring. This is usually a quiet time of year in the fundraising calendar, without many competing events. Similarly, as most varieties grow well over summer, they make a great Christmas or end-of-year fundraiser.
*At this stage, due to strict quarantine restrictions on importing seed and soil components, Seed Bombs are not currently available for some states and territories (WA, SA, Tas and NT). This page will be updated to reflect any future changes.
The shelf life of the seed bombs are around 4 months, which isn’t as long as ordinary packets of seeds. However this lends a sense of occasion and you can hold a seed-bombing weekend and ask people to share pictures of the event and later, as the bombs come to flower.
They would make a perfect product to sell at an eco-market or school fete.
